This project has been in part funded by a LEADER fund grant of £20,644 to do the electrical and building work needed to ensure good environmental conditions for our collection and exhibitions. This funding has allowed us to bring loans from sister museums and to remain open much of the year. This funding, combined with a Lidl Section 106 Grant from North Dorset for £5,000 has allowed us to make huge changes to our museum and for this we are very grateful.

LEADER is a unique European Programme –local people make the decisions about what and where funding would make the greatest difference.  It is a well-established method of providing Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding at the local level. LEADER is a (French) acronym which roughly translates as ‘Liaison among Actors in Rural Economic Development’.  The RDP is how European funding under Pillar 2 of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is delivered.  It provides support for economic, social and environmental development in the countryside.

Grants are awarded by a LEADER Local Action Group who fund projects in line with the needs of the rural economy, as set out in their Local Development Strategy (LDS).

Membership of the Local Action Group is open to everyone who has an interest in their rural community.  One of 80 groups around rural England, its principal role is to provide rural communities with a voice in local democracy, together with access to funding for projects which support their local strategies.
